16 Oct 2014 [REVIEW] Paste Magazine: ‘Haemoo’, a suspenseful gem that deserves to be seen

Tripping the Fest Fantastic

A look at the best films of the 2014 festival

By Tim Basham

While Fantastic Fest may be seen as a genre event, any festival would be hard-pressed to match this year’s FF films. It may be the best crop in their ten-year history. […] Here were my favorites:

If there’s any justice, Haemoo will receive an Oscar nomination for best foreign film. It’s that good. But it’s also dark, may be too dark for the academy. When a struggling and desperate fishing boat captain agrees to smuggle some Chinese-Koreans on his trawler, a horrible disaster occurs. In the midst of the danger, however, director Shim Sung-Bo brings romance into tragedy. There are some seriously grand performances from the cast, and the cinematography is reminiscent of The Perfect Storm. With the help of producer/writer/director Joon-ho Bong (The Host) Sung-Bo has created a suspenseful gem that deserves to be seen.

Admin’s notes:
1. Fantastic Fest is the largest genre film festival in the U.S., specializing in horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action and just plain fantastic movies from all around the world (fantasticfest.com)
2. Parts unrelated to Haemoo were omitted.

  1. Yes, at least an Oscar nomination!

  2. @Pink Sapphire, I pray so. Yu Chun deserves this.

  3. I too pray that Haemoo will make it to the Oscars..

    with much love..

  4. I’ve ticked off seven consonants already, not counting this one vowel, THE BIG O haha! I wonder how many more consonants to go. 😀

Last year when Yuchun started filming for Haemoo I was already praying for Blue Dragon. The Academy never even entered my mind! Tsk tsk! You never really know where this man is gonna take you. The fact that it was chosen to represent Korea at the Oscars is already a great honor. If and when Haemoo makes it to the final nominee list, I guess I would be too speechless by then. And thankful for answered prayers. There are 83 contenders after all. This is totally mind-boggling!

Haemoo team, Park Yuchun, you are Oscars bound! Whatever the outcome will be, you already did great! Congratulations! Park Yuchun, I am so proud of you! 🙂
